Combined Grades
HOW DOES IT WORK?
CURRICULUM LINKS
The Ontario Curriculum continues to build upon specific expectations year-after-year - providing a continuum of learning and the development of skills.
The teaching and learning approaches in combined grade classrooms can look different depending on the subject and topics being explored. Here are a few of the approaches:
- Introduce a common topic then give each grade a different task or problem.
- Break students into groups to study different problems and report back to the class. These groups can be flexible, including students with varied interests and skills.
- Introduce a common topic, then provide the Grade 5's with a practice task while continuing to develop the complexity of the topic with the Grade 6's.
